Gems for Jesus exists to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and bring awareness about Type 1 Diabetes, in hopes towards a cure.
In February of 2026, Type 1 Diabetes met us in an unimaginable, but common way. After entering the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, our daughter was diagnosed with Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), a potentially life-threatening medical emergency that caused blood to become to acidic and break down stored fat for energy because her body was not producing the insulin it needed to to use blood glucose for energy.
Unimaginable, in a sense that no one saw it coming. Common because we would later find out that Global Pediatric Health has cited up to 40% of patients with new-onset T1D present in DKA. That is up to 4 in 10 children!
A lot was tossed our way in 3 days of a hospital stay. Insulin, blood glucose, CGMs, carb counting, blood sugar control, hormones, autoimmune, A1C, nutrition, sick-day management were all part of the trainings we received. But the most important information we took away was: IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT.
Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that presents itself due to genetic predisposition and a possible environmental factor, such as a virus, that triggered the condition.
Leaning on Jesus and letting our faith guide our family has been a relief. We know God knows all our days, and has plans for our daughter through this diagnosis.
Every day, T1D Warriors and their caregivers rise to meet the highs and lows of life — while simultaneously battling the relentless highs and lows of a chronic disease. Those living with Type 1 Diabetes depend on daily insulin injections to survive. It is an incurable, lifelong autoimmune disease that demands courage, resilience, and faith.
Just as the natural world forges gems under immense pressure, God uses the weight of our trials to shape us into something radiant. When we keep fighting, stay faithful, and trust that He will never leave us — we are transformed. In Him, we become Gems for Jesus.
